ABSTRACT. - Brown rot, caused by the fungus Monilinia fructicola, is the most important disease in peach production areas of Brazil. The main objective of this work was to seek sources of brown rot resistance, as well as to study the segregation, and estimate the heritability. Heritability of brown rot resistance was investigated in fruits, from several peach genotypes of the Embrapa peach breeding program. Sixteen populations and 20 parents were evaluated. Disinfested fruits were wounded with a microsyringe and inoculated by deposition of a 10μL drop of a 2.5 x 104 spores mL-1 of M. fructicola. After inoculation, the fruits were incubated under controlled conditions for 72 hours, before evaluation of lesion size and sporulation. High phenotypic variability and transgressive segregation were observed for brown rot resistance in fruits. Among the seedling population several genotypes showed higher resistance than Bolinha, the standard Brazilian cultivar for resistance. The heritability of brown rot resistance in fruits (diameter of the lesion and sporulation) is medium. Parental selection based on phenotype enables a medium genetic
advance for brown rot resistance. The parents Conserva 947 and Conserva 1600 have low susceptibility to disease (similar to ?Bolinha?), passing this trait to their offspring. Abstract: Future rice systems will need to produce more grain while minimizing the environmental impact. A key question is how to orient agricultural research & development (R&D) programs at national to global scales to maximize the return on investment. Here we assess yield gap and resource-use efficiency (including water, pesticides, nitrogen, labor, and energy) across 32 rice cropping systems, together accounting for 88% of global rice production. We show that achieving high yields and high resource-use efficiencies are not conflicting goals. Most cropping systems have room for increasing yield, resource-use efficiency, or both. In aggregate, current total rice production of these systems can be increased by 36%, and excess nitrogen almost eliminated, by focusing on a relatively small number of cropping systems with large yield gaps and/or poor resource-use efficiencies. This study provides essential strategic insight for prioritizing national and global agricultural R&D investments to ensure adequate rice supply while minimizing negative environmental impact in coming decades. |
